Jurnal iLubnan 8 April : Tiba di sempadan Lebanon - Palestine

8hb April 2012: Visit to Lebanese-Palestinian Border

From ‘Umar, Al-Mughîrah, Thawbân, Abu Hurairah, Qurrah bin Iyâs, Jâbir, ‘Imrân bin Husain, ‘Uqbah bin ‘Âmir, Jâbir bin Samurah, and Abu Umâmah (may Allah be pleased with them all) who narrated,“The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, ‘A group from my nation will remain adhering to religion victorious by it, and conquering their enemy. Not (the least) harmed by those who desert them, except for the hardship they suffer until the Command of Allah (the Last Day) comes to pass while they are still so.’ They (the Companions) asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah! Where are they? He answered,  ‘In Baitul-Maqdis (Jerusalem) and the environs of Baitul-Maqdis.’ (At-Tabrani)

The Lebanese-Palestinian border is approximately 3 hours south from Beirut. As we approached the border, we had to stop at several army checkpoints. At the last checkpoint, our passports were checked. Ironically, Palestinians are not allowed to go near the border without permission beforehand.

Despite looking composed every time we were scrutinised, it was a nerve-wrecking experience to be within close proximity to armed fierce-looking soldiers with tanks nearby. Imagine living with that every day, and having to pass such hostility just to have a glimpse of your hometown.

We passed by two more refugee camps; Ar-Rashidiah and Ain Helwah. The highway to the border was along the coast, and the difference between our views on the opposite sides was starkingly horrendous. On our right was the beautiful Lebanese coast. Luxurious hotels filled the panorama, with clear blue sea as the background.

In contrast, to our left was a disorganised area of crumbling, half-bombed buildings which was a sore to the eyesight. Even from afar, we could feel the suffering. How could people stay in those posh hotels fully aware that opposite them were people living in such disgraceful conditions?

As we approached the border, we saw several Lebanese villages which were destroyed several times by the Israeli army during their invasion. But these houses were rebuilt and rebuilt, again and yet again, every time this happens.

This is normal, according to Brother Mahmood. For them, life is about perseverance. They will continue to rebuild their lives, every time Israel tries to destroy them.

The Lebanese-Palestinian border is a long stretch of road, with a high wired fence on both sides. We stopped at several points along the border to get a better view.

Across the fence, we saw nicely arranged fields and houses. These are Israeli settlements in Palestine. There were cars passing with people looking happy inside, living life as if nothing had happened.

“Imagine people robbing your house, killing your family, and driving you away from your house. Then, you come back to see them living life there so guilt-free you wonder if anything really happened,” exclaimed Brother Mahmood as he gazed the land of his hometown.

We continued the journey, and Brother Mahmood sang Palestinian songs, as an expression of his deep longing to return home.
Then, we stopped at Hadiqah Iran, a recreational park facing the land of Palestine. There, many Lebanese families were enjoying themselves, however we decided to gather together facing Palestine and reminded ourselves the reason why we are fighting for this sacred land.

“We are sad, but we are hopeful. We believe that one day we will return, it is just a matter of time,” says Brother Mahmood.

He then reminded us the three conditions in order to liberate Palestine.
  1.         Faith in Allah and his promise of victory (Al-Imaan Billah)
  2.          Strong preparation; in terms of knowledge and material.
  3.          Perseverance (As-Sabr)
At the last point we stopped by, we were literally 2-3m away from the sacred land. It was so near, yet so far, prevented by the high barbed fence and UN soldiers guarding the area. It was so frustrating and saddening at the same time. We vowed that one day, the fence will be torn down and we will have the chance to walk freely across the grass and pray in Masjidil Aqsa.
InsyaAllah.

Ya Allah, please liberate Palestine and make us among its liberators.

Jurnal iLubnan: 7 April

7th April 2012: Visit to Institutions and Palestinian Refugee Camps.

The first morning comprised of visits to various institutions working for the Palestinian cause, specifically Humanitarian Relief for Development Institution (Al-Ghawth), Takaful for Child Welfare (Takaful), and the Palestinian Association for Human Rights (Witness).

Firstly, we visited Al-Ghawth, where they explained the organisation’s aims, vision, mission and future prospects.

Al-Ghawth provides material and financial aid to impoverished families, orphans, widows and disabled people. Their work involves mainly those living in Palestinian refugee camps; however they also cater to the general population of Lebanon.

When asked about funding, Sister Imaan smiled and said, “We may not have much money but doing charity work is a noble job in the eyes of Allah. Therefore we put trust in Him that He will take care of our affairs and ease our efforts..”

We handed a donation of £9,800 to Al-Ghawth.

Secondly, we went to Takaful, where we discussed about the long term plan regarding the Palestinian Orphan Sponsorship.  Following the footsteps of Aqsa Syarif, who were highly appreciated for the thousands of orphans they have adopted, we established a formal collaboration between Israa’ Institution and Takaful. We hope that this would facilitate more contributions from Malaysians in the United Kingdom and Ireland for these orphans.

Since the launch of HOPE campaign two weeks ago, we managed to raise £5, 600 which enabled us to sponsor 7 orphans for two years Insyaallah.

This sponsorship covers their basic living needs and education. Takaful monitors their progress monthly, and they shared how life changing this sponsorship was to these bright but unfortunate orphans.

Takaful also provided biodata of the orphans sponsored, together with a handwritten thank you note from the orphans which we shall distribute to the generous donors soon.

Next we went to Witness, which is an organisation fighting for Palestinian’s human rights. They carry out research and highlight various human rights issues at both national and international level, in addition to catering to local and individual needs for people in the refugee camps. We handed a donation of €2,300 to Witness.

Amazingly, there are only four main players behind this amazing feat. When asked how they managed this, Brother Mahmood said, “We are Muslims, not just by identity card, but by heart and mind. Therefore, one of us equals to 10 people.“ This reminded us of verse 65 in Surah Al-Anfaal,
“O Prophet! Urge the believers to war. If there are 20 patient ones of you, they shall overcome 200 and if there are 100 of you, they shall overcome 1000 of those who disbelieve, because they are people who do not understand. “

After lunch, we headed off to the refugee camps in Beirut. There are 12 Palestinian Refugee Camps in Lebanon, and 5 are located in Beirut. We visited Shatila and Burj Al-Barajneh.

Buildings were built in a haphazard manner, without proper foundation and structure. Houses were separated by narrow and damp alleys with an unpleasant smell, about 80cm in width maximum. Electric wires were dangling just above our head, intertwined with water pipes, causing several fire incidents and supply shortage in the past.

In addition, the Lebanese government discriminate against them, by denying them the right to buy property outside the camp, employment and also healthcare in public hospitals. Therefore, their only healthcare provider is the UN clinic in the refugee camp, which has limited manpower and medical supplies.

Although nothing can do justice to picture their difficult life, pictures below illustrate the sufferings of our brothers and sisters.
Despite all this, in the words of Brother Mahmood, who was raised in a refugee camp, “Life goes on”.

Stay tuned for our experience visiting the Lebanese-Palestinian border the next day!!

Jurnal iLubnan: 6 April

6th April 2012: Journey to Beirut, Lebanon

Our main delegation, which comprised of 7 members departed from London Heathrow at 12:40pm, while 3 members of the delegation departed from Cairo, Egypt.

The main delegation’s journey was halted suddenly when thick fog covered Beirut’s sky, preventing any flights from landing in Beirut. Therefore, our flight was diverted to Cyprus.

After 2 hours of waiting, Alhamdulillah, our flight resumed its journey and we arrived in Beirut at 10:00 at night. Despite arriving later than our plan, we took the opportunity to refresh and purify our intentions.

Meanwhile, the delegation from Cairo faced similar problems. Their flight was initially delayed for a few hours. At 9:00pm, however, the crew announced that the aeroplane would only fly tomorrow and passengers were to sleep at a nearby hotel.

They arrived at the hotel at around 11:30pm, only to be woken up at 1:00am, as the flight was scheduled for 3:00am. Alas, the flight only departed at about 4:00am. But Alhamdulillah, they finally arrived in Beirut at 7:00am just in time to join the rest of the team.

This experience taught all of us patience, and was a good opportunity to remind ourselves of Allah’s power, as He mentions in Surah Ali-Imraan, verse 54:

“And they planned and Allah (also) planned, and Allah is the best of planners.
